Make Elementary Reading a Shared Habit

Reading at home does not have to look like another lesson. A regular, relaxed exchange about a book can help children connect words with meaning and discover what they enjoy.

Give your child a choice

Offer books, comics, recipes, or library selections that fit their interests. Read aloud together even when your child can read independently. Take turns with a page, or let them listen while you read a more challenging story.

Talk about meaning

Pause to ask, “What do you think will happen?” or “Why did that character decide that?” Accept an unexpected answer and ask what in the text led them there. If a word is unfamiliar, talk about the sentence and try it in a new one. Keep the exchange brief enough to preserve the pleasure of reading.

Work with the teacher

If reading is frustrating, ask which skill your child is practicing and what kind of activity would help at home. The Institute of Education Sciences has practical K–3 family reading ideas you can adapt together.

End with an invitation to read again, not a score. A small habit has room to grow.
