Student Parents: Build a Support Map for the Semester

Raising a child while studying can mean juggling several schedules. A support map is a simple list of people and campus services you can ask for help. Make one before a busy week turns into a crisis.

Find the gaps in your week

Write down class times, study time, work shifts, child care hours, and rides. Add your child’s school schedule. Mark the times when one change could affect the rest of your day. If you can, choose a backup person or plan for each gap.

Ask your campus for help

Contact the student services or financial aid office. Ask about child care, help with urgent needs, course advice, tutoring, and groups for student parents. Some colleges offer child care support through the federal CCAMPIS program. Each campus has its own services and rules. Ask what is offered, who can apply, and when forms are due.

Share a clear plan

Tell someone you trust what would help most. It might be school pickup, a quiet hour to study, a meal, or a check-in. If a child care problem affects an assignment, tell your instructor as soon as you can. Ask about a next step that fits the course rules.

Review your map each month. Asking for support is part of planning. Visit our Student Parents page for more ideas.
