High School Planning: Start With the Next Decision

A Black teacher guides teenage students collaborating in a high school classroom.

College, work, training, and graduation can feel like one big decision. Start with the next step instead of trying to plan your whole future at once.

Plan for this school year

Meet with a school counselor to check what you need to graduate. List your course choices and the dates when forms are due. Ask about ways to explore your interests. School rules can change, so use your school’s current guidance.

Try something small

Ask someone about their job, visit a training program, volunteer, or compare two career paths. Write down what you liked and what did not fit. A small trial can teach you more than guessing from a job title.

Plan your study time

Break a large assignment into steps: research, a first draft, feedback, and a final draft. Put each step on your calendar. Use short practice questions to check what you can explain without notes. The IES study guide shares more ideas for study and review.

Parents can ask what help the student wants and help find trusted sources. Give support while leaving room for the student to make choices.
